Alice Rose Gunn Swing makes massive things that people want to wear. As a freelance costume designer and maker, Alice creates large scale and awe-inspiring costumes for performance, television, theatre and dance. She produces top quality costumes that create drama and fascination.
Alice has worked in the costume departments of Dancing With The Stars (2014) and Australia’s Got Talent (2011-2012), creating beautiful and edgy ballroom dance dresses under the watchful eye of Tim Chappel and a plethora of costumes for varying acts and performers, from seductive glittering showgirls swathed in feathers to punk futuristic, lycra-clad dancers.
Alice is skilled in large-scale costumes such as the mascots she designed and constructed for Moomba Festivals Birdman Rally in Melbourne. These included two bird mascots; an oversized hawk, with multicolour wings and aviation goggles and helmet, and a clumsy but cute penguin.
Alice has worked as a pattern-maker for The State School Spectacular for the last seven years, costuming hundreds of school children of all ages. The show, staged at Hisense Arena, is a colourful and dazzling event, with costume being one of the major features. In 2013, she worked on costumes for Dracula’s Theatre Restaurant, an array of burlesque vampires and exotic aerialists.
Alice completed a Creative Arts Degree in 2006 and graduated from Fashion Design in 2009. She has brought together these two disciplines in Unwearables – an exhibition of art/fashion hybrids that featured a plethora of emerging artists and designers. As the curator of this event, Alice displayed the work of practitioners who are pushing the boundaries and creating work that fascinates and provokes.
Alice also runs wearable art workshops with a sustainability and remaking focus. She has participated in the Sustainable Living Festival Slow Fashion Show, Earthfest and runs workshops in regional areas.
She lives and breathes costume and cannot be stopped from decking herself out head to toe, in some kind of exotic garment or the other. Alice creates made to order costumes and would be delighted to hear from you.
